Story Pyramid
Comprehension
EALR's and Objectives:
- To make sure the students understand the story
Students will be able:
to read and understand a story
to state the story problem
to state the solution to the problem
Reading
1.1 Use word recognition and word meaning skills to read and comprehend text.
2.2 Expand comprehension by analyzing, interpreting, and synthesizing information and
ideas.
Writing
2.2 Write in a variety of forms.
Materials:
- Fictional storybook
- Paper
- Pencils
Procedure:
- Read story to class.
- Spilt class in groups of two.
- The students will get a worksheet with the story pyramid on it (as shown below).
- The students will write a sentence for each line using the number of spaces as the amount of words for each sentence. Then they will write a sentence for each space for
each line.
- Give instructions out loud to class as they finish each line of pyramid (have some sort of signal to have students tell you when they have finished that line.
- Each group will pair off with two other groups and share their Story Pyramids with the others in their new group.
Have the students fill in the pyramid with the information asked for below.
- write the name of the main character
- two words describing the main character
- three words describing the setting
- four words stating the story problem
- five words describing one event in the story
- six words describing a second event
- seven words describing a third event
- eight words describing the solution to the problem
Assessment:
- Story Pyramid
- Use this pyramid as an outline for a summary of the story.
