EALR's and Objectives:
- Students will know what acronyms are and why they are
important.
- Students will get an understanding why acronyms are
used.
Reading
1.2 build vocabulary through reading.
2.1 comprehend important ideas and details
3.1 read to learn new information
Writing
2.2 read to learn new information
Procedures:
- Give a brief description of what acronyms are and give
examples such as FBI, NBA, NASA. Ask them if they know what any of these mean?
Look up in dictionary.
- Have students list all the acronyms they can think of.
- Break students into groups of two giving each student in each
group
a section of a newspaper.
- Each student will search through the section of his or her
newspaper
to find and list as many acronyms as they can find. A little competition
between groups
for who can find the most.
- Bring students lists together in one big list on the board.
Discuss
meanings and possible wrong answers and why?
Assessment:
- Search through Newspaper list acronyms.
- Discuss meanings in class discussion. Do acronyms make it
easier
or harder to know things? Why are acronyms important?
