Goals (Essential Learnings):
- students will learn new vocabulary and comprehend the story better
knowing this vocabulary.
Reading
1.2 build vocabulary through reading.
2.2 expand comprehension by analyzing, interpreting, and synthesizing information and
ideas.
Communication
1.1 focus attention
1.3 check for understanding by asking questions and paraphrasing.
Materials Needed:
- Vocabulary flashcards (word on one side and definition on the other
side).
- Book (can be any book). I used "Doctor on an Elephant" by Steven
Kroll
- Pencils, markers, crayons.
- Drawing paper
Procedures:
- Introduce vocabulary flashcards (with word on one side and
definition on another).
- Have student pick flashcard out of a hat or bowl and read the vocabulary
word and try to guess the meaning of the word.
- Have students then read the definition of the word.
- Introduce book "Doctor on an Elephant".
- Show cover of book and ask about, what they think the story is
about.
- Ask comprehension questions.
- Students will pick one of the vocabulary words from the story and
draw a picture of it.
Assessment:
- Students will pick one of the vocabulary words and draw a picture
and write a sentence about it to show an understanding of the vocabulary.
