Building a Model of a Dream Home/Group Lesson

Essential Learning:

Reading

Objectives:

The students will identify how architects use shapes.

The students will work cooperatively to create and execute a plan to build a model of a home.

The students will create a cone, cube, rectangular prism, and cylinder.

The students will use at least three, three-dimensional shapes in their dream home.

Materials Needed:

Various books about architecture and three-dimensional shapes.

Patterns for three-dimensional shapes, construction paper, tag board, scissors, glue.

Procedures

Pre Activity:

"How many of you know what an architect does? What is the difference between architecture and an architect?"

"What shapes do architects use to build things? Are those three- dimensional or two dimensional?"

"Today, each of you are going to join a team of other architects. Together, you will design a model of your dream home."

Spilt students into groups of four.

Demonstrate how to make cones, rectangular prisms, cylinders and cubes from the photocopied patterns. Have students practice making their own shapes

Discuss with the class that they will be acting as architects and that it is very important for architects to have a plan.

Activity:

Give students enough time to come up with a plan for their model dream homes. Have students use research materials provided to help them plan their model dream homes.

They must incorporate at least three, three-dimensional shapes.

Mount their dream homes on tag board. Display them for all to enjoy.

Post Activity:

Examples of some questions that could be asked:

What did you learn from this activity? What did you like best about it?

Who can tell me what subject we are studying? What do architects do?

What are three- dimensional shapes?

Assessment:

Have a quiz on geometric shapes and their names, what is an architect? And why is it important for architects to plan?

Check each group's dream home and make sure there are three, three-dimensional shapes incorporated, and are labeled properly.

Have each group write a step by step guide on how they made their dream home.

Have each group present their dream homes and tell why it is their dream home.

As a class list the responsibilities of an architect on the board.

Have each student list items from their homes that are geometric shapes.
